Phone Banking & Canvassing
A message from Branch 78 Retiree and State AFL-CIO Delegate, Jacki Mitchell:
I know politics isn't everyone's favorite subject, but now more than ever, we need people to get involved.
While recent polling suggests Sherrod Brown and Amy Acton are leading, we cannot afford to become complacent. We've seen promising numbers before, only to be disappointed by the results. Nothing should be taken for granted.
I'd like to organize three events at the UFCW hall. An officers' night, a retirees' night, and an active letter carriers' night. I'll be sending out a text message encouraging participation, and I'm asking our officers to help spread the word.
These events also provide an opportunity for newer carriers to become involved, for candidates seeking branch office to introduce themselves, and for our membership to demonstrate unity and solidarity. During the 2008 presidential election, Branch 78 had an incredible turnout alongside unions throughout our community. I'd love to see that same level of involvement again.
I understand everyone has busy schedules, so I'm simply asking members to consider volunteering two to three hours whenever they're available. Opportunities include phone banking, canvassing, or serving as a driver for those who prefer not to speak directly with voters.
Volunteers receive a script and can incorporate their own experiences if they choose. Brenda Stidams has participated before and can speak to how straightforward the process is. As letter carriers, we're already accustomed to interacting with people every day.
Canvassing takes place during the day, while phone banking is available during daytime and evening hours. Opportunities are available seven days a week, and volunteers can select neighborhoods they're familiar with, including where they live or deliver mail.
At this stage, the focus has shifted from persuading voters to encouraging voter turnout. Outreach will be directed toward union households. Every contribution of time helps, and participation is entirely voluntary. I hope we'll see strong involvement from Branch 78 and the broader labor community.
